I’m going to try to get to SB Feb 4th (SBIFF events) through 7th (for Arlington West)…do you know any hosts as my boat will remain in Long Beach.
There is a bicycle memorial on the corner in front of Shoreline Village Marina in Long Beach. It is an old frame painted white with the now deceased bicyclist’s name and memorabilia on it, photos of him in life etc. It is attached to the light pole at the intersection where he was struck and killed by an unattentive motorist. He was obeying all laws and riding properly. The motorist was not prosecuted as she had not intended to hit him or kill him…just an accident! I think this is a good reminder for people, especially the killer and her family, but what we really need is something more like MADD, who finally got people prosecuted for homicide who did not intend to kill anyone…who had an “accident”. My motto, hit a bicyclist, go to jail! I remember a youngster, I think he was Zack, who was hit and killed in Santa Barbara. He was riding properly but the driver who killed him was not jailed. This is NOT justice! My son Chris was struck down by a motorist while he was riding his bicycle to school when he was five years old. He spent months in patient and had many operations before he could again lead a normal life. The woman who ran over him had hit two other people but was not jailed. Ralph, who has such good repoire with the city leadership could press this, I think. I have sailed my boat to Long Beach and there is a Bikestation here. My bike is at Bikestation in Santa Barbara and I wonder if I can bring it to this one as well. I will try my pass key on this one.
From Santa Barbara where my mooring is:
Now:
I have perhaps the safest mooring of all, inside Grissom Island and the Shoreline Village breakwater, and all of that inside the greater Long Beach/LA Harbor breakwater (all nine miles of it). Grissom Island is covered with forms and waterfalls illuminated at night with pastel lights. In the background is the Queen Mary with its great red stacks and behind her the huge cranes of the harbors and the tanks of Wilmington. Long Beach Shoreline area also has the Rainbow Lagoon and a lot of artwork in the streets. I chose it because it is the southern end of the LA Metrolink system and I can get to VAMC WLA or to Arlington West Santa Monica much faster than from San Pedro or Long Beach. It has a huge public library at the civic center near my boat but it has been flooded and closed….said it had an undesigned swimming pool on its flat roof. I’m at the Redondo Beach Libary now and if I don’t finish everything I’ll go a few blocks to the Hermosa Beach library. As far as sailing, I’m leaning toward spending another season cruising the channel islands and will probably go to Catalina Harbor after the storms lift….then up to Santa Barbara Island and back to Santa Cruz to see what wonders the rain has wrought. I may be back in Santa Barbara with the boat in April or May but will anchor out then unless someone offers me a real bed.
On Saturday, January 23rd, I got lost on the metro bus system and ended up at Echo Park. It was the first day after a week of rain and it felt like colorado…the air was clear and I was surrounded by snow capped peaks!
Best wishes, Slow Lane
