From TRNP I went to Bismarck to visit Herb Wilson, a member of Veterans For Peace and WW2 navigator who flew thirty missions over Germany. He is one of the chosen few as only one in five completed their thirty missions and half were killed. Herb is 86 and stands in black at the North Dakota capitol. After my visit with him I proceeded to Jamestown, North Dakota to meet George Barnes, a member of all three of my most important fellowships, AA, VFP and AFL-CIO. Keep up the good work, George and travelers stop and visit the two of them. Having spent the night in an interstate rest area, I entered Fargo to meet the bulk of North Dakotas Veterans For Peace, led by activist Ron Saeger. I was housed there by WW2 veteran Lew Lubka.
Than on to Minnesota and a small diversion to the twin cities to meet old friends, Bob Heberle and fellow El Salvador Election Observers Wayne Wittman and Steve Boyer…vfp members all. Minnesota has more than ten thousand lakes since the highway is lined with new lakes with dead and dying trees in them. Things are very green and the mosquitos are brutal. I will participate in the demonstration/fast against torture on the anniversary of the signing of the “torture memos” and leave tomorrow, Monday, for Duluth and on to the Apostle Islands and Sault St Marie…then a bit of Canada, hey?
