Don Calamar
A founding member of the Col. Jim and Prof. Shirley Kennedy Chapter of Veterans For Peace, Don Calamar devoted his talents, energy and heart to the abolition of nuclear weapons and of war, and to the preservation of the planet.
As a member of the Army’s Signal Corps during WWII, Don was authorized by General Dwight D. Eisenhower to photograph the war throughout Europe, and his work was included in the “March of Time” series as well in as innumerable documentaries, news reports, and retrospectives. Those experiences fired him with a passion for peace that made him glow, and he subtly and profoundly influenced the many communities that were blessed by his committed presence. Even at 86 Don came to every VFP meeting and was, with his life partner and fellow VFP member Pat Chamberlin, our representative to the local chapter of the United Nations Association. Don and Pat tabled faithfully at Santa Barbara City College and are life-long mentors and educators to generations of grateful friends.
Life is short, and we do not have too much time
to gladden the hearts of those who travel
the way with us. So be swift to love, and make haste
to be kind.
